A mid-20th century inventory-based estimate of global terrestrial vegetation carbon stocks

چکیده

Terrestrial biomass carbon stocks (BCS) play a vital role in the climate system, but benchmarked estimates prior to late twentieth century remain scarce. Here, by making use of an early global forest resource assessment and harmonizing information on land densities, we establish BCS account for year 1950. Our best-guess estimate is 450.2 PgC (median all modulations: 517.8 PgC, range: 443.7–584.0 PgC), with ecosystems Southern America Western Africa storing c. 27 16% total respectively. are line change emissions suggest reduction 8–29% compared median, losses tropical subcontinents partially offset gains northern subcontinents. study demonstrates approach reconstruct triangulating different data sources extends accounts further back into century.

Climate legacies drive global soil carbon stocks in terrestrial ecosystems

Climatic conditions shift gradually over millennia, altering the rates at which carbon (C) is fixed from the atmosphere and stored in the soil. However, legacy impacts of past climates on current soil C stocks are poorly understood. We used data from more than 5000 terrestrial sites from three global and regional data sets to identify the relative importance of current and past (Last Glacial Ma...

Terrestrial vegetation dynamics and global climate controls

Monthly data from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and its predecessor satellite sensors was used to reconstruct vegetation dynamics in response to climate patterns over the period 1983–2005. Results suggest that plant growth over extensive land areas of southern Africa and Central Asia were the most closely coupled of any major land area to El Niño–southern oscillation...

Comment on “Climate legacies drive global soil carbon stocks in terrestrial ecosystems”

Delgado-Baquerizo et al. (Science Advances, 12 April 2017, e1602008) use statistical correlations to infer that paleoclimate (6000 to 22,000 years ago) is a more important driver of current soil organic carbon stocks than the current-day climate. On the other hand, a wealth of radiocarbon measurements indicates that the organic carbon in most topsoils is only a few decades to perhaps a few cent...

Response to comment on “Climate legacies drive global soil carbon stocks in terrestrial ecosystem”

The technical comment from Sanderman provides a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms explaining the role of paleoclimate in the contemporary distribution of global soil C content, as reported in our article. Sanderman argues that the role of paleoclimate in predicting soil C content might be accounted for by using slowly changing soil properties as predictors. This i...

Inventory-based estimates of forest biomass carbon stocks in China: A comparison of three methods

Several studies have reported different estimates for forest biomass carbon (C) stocks in China. The discrepancy among these estimatesmay be largely attributed to themethods used. In this study,we used three methods [mean biomass density method (MBM), mean ratio method (MRM), and continuous biomass expansion factor (BEF) method (abbreviated as CBM)] applied to forest inventory data to estimate ...
